Intranasal steroid sprays are used for children with repeated or persistent nasal blockage as a result of chronic nasal allergies or nasal swellings like nasal polyps. These sprays are different from the decongestant sprays that are available easily to relieve blocked nose.
Intranasal steroids work by reducing swelling and mucus in the nasal passages thus relieving symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and even itching.
Intranasal sprays work best when used regularly for prolonged duration. Intermittent use may not be very effective in all children. It usually 1-2 weeks for the symptoms of stuffiness to improve.
Intranasal steroid sprays are very safe in adults and children. It can be prescribed to pregnant women as well. These sprays work only in the nasal passages and don’t affect the other parts much.
Some of the side effects that can happen are
1. Stinging and burning nose
2. Nasal dryness and crusting
3. Throat irritation
4. Nose bleeds
Apart from these local side-effects, intranasal steroids are found to be extremely safe with no systemic side effects unless they are used more than what is prescribed by your doctor.
